Bathroom Lighting Design: More Than Rows of Downlights

Lighting can be one of the biggest differences between an average bathroom and one that feels calm, comfortable and carefully designed.

Yet it is often reduced to a simple instruction:

“Put four downlights in the ceiling.”

Downlights can provide useful general illumination, but they do not automatically give you flattering light at the mirror, comfortable lighting at night or the atmosphere expected from a premium ensuite.

Good bathroom lighting begins with the way the room will be used. It considers faces at the mirror, movement through the space, showers, storage, cleaning, relaxation and the different amount of light needed at six in the morning and ten at night.

A bathroom does not need to feel like a commercial changing room. Good illumination should make the room easy to use without creating glare or visual fatigue.

Dimming can be useful where the same general fittings need to serve bright cleaning light and a softer evening setting.

Layer 2: Mirror and Vanity Lighting

  • A separate low-output ceiling circuit

Keep nighttime controls simple

The user should not need to remember a complicated sequence of switches.
