Pre-line Checklist for Interior Linings (NZ Building Standard Guide)

Our proven quality control process before installing GIB and interior linings — ensuring every project meets or exceeds NZ building standards.

What is a Preline Checklist?

A preline checklist is a critical quality control process completed before interior wall and ceiling linings (such as GIB) are installed. At this stage of a build, all structural elements, services, framing, insulation, fixing requirements, and wet area preparation all need to be checked before the walls and ceilings are closed up.

A thorough preline process helps reduce rework, improve coordination between trades, and maintain build quality from the start.

Why Process Matters in Construction

Many construction issues don’t come from major failures — they come from small things being missed before walls and ceilings are closed up.

Our process-driven approach ensures:

  • Critical checks are completed at the right stage

  • Trades are coordinated before work is covered

  • Problems are identified early, not after the fact

  • Every stage of the build is documented and verified

This is how we reduce rework, avoid delays, and maintain a high standard of finish across every Buildmac project.

Our Preline Quality Control Process

At Buildmac, every project goes through a detailed pre-line inspection before linings are installed.

This ensures:

  • All services are installed and tested

  • Framing and supports are correctly prepared

  • Insulation meets required standards

  • GIB fixing requirements are met

  • The site is ready for the next stage

This process helps eliminate errors, improves build quality, and ensures compliance with NZ building standards and manufacturer guidelines.

Materials & Site Readiness

Before starting linings, we confirm all materials are on site and stored correctly.

  • GIB, glue, and screws are on site and stored correctly

  • Site is clean and ready for installation

Services & Pre-Wire Check

All services must be fully installed before linings begin.

  • Electrical pre-wire completed

  • Plumbing, gas, and aircon installed

  • Pipes secured and marked

  • Walkthrough completed with trades

A full walkthrough is completed with the relevant trades and client to confirm everything is ready.

Framing & Structural Preparation

Correct framing support is essential before lining.

  • Nogs installed for:

    • TVs

    • Dryers

    • Rangehoods

    • Towel rails

    • Shower screens

    • Wall-hung vanities

    • Shelving

    • Sliding doors

  • Ceiling battens or Rondo systems installed at correct spacing

  • Handibracs and structural fixings installed as per plans and NZ building code

  • Walls (especially bathrooms and kitchens) checked for plumb and straight

Services & Pre-Wire Checks

All services must be fully installed before linings begin.

  • Electrical pre-wire completed

  • Plumbing installed, including mixers and pipework

  • Air conditioning and gas services installed

  • Pipes secured and silicone applied to prevent pipe movement

  • Pipes clearly marked on floors for future reference

A full walkthrough is completed with the relevant trades to confirm everything is ready.

Plumbing & Wet Area Preparation

Special attention is given to wet areas before lining.

  • Shower trays installed level and set correctly relative to framing

  • Bathroom layouts checked against plans

  • Wall preparation meets requirements for tile finishes

Insulation & Compliance Checks

Before closing up walls, insulation must be verified.

  • Insulation installed in correct locations

  • Correct R-values used as per specifications

  • Insulation fitted snugly with no gaps

  • Inspections completed and signed off

Documentation & Site Records

We document all critical elements before linings are installed.

  • Photos taken of:

    • Plumbing

    • Nogging

    • Insulation

    • Structural fixings

This ensures transparency and provides a record for future reference.

GIB Installation Requirements

All GIB installation must meet manufacturer specifications.

Ceiling Fixing

  • Glue spacing: 200mm, 400mm, 800mm, 1000mm

  • Screw fixing: 1 screw at 600mm centres

  • Edge fixing: 300mm centres

Wall Fixing

  • Glue spacing: 300mm, 600mm, 900mm

  • Bracing patterns:

    • 50mm, 50mm, 50mm, 75mm, 75mm, 150mm centres at edges

  • All screws checked to ensure they are flush

Tile areas are checked against GIB guidelines to ensure correct fixing for tile weight.

Final Preline Checks

Before moving to the next stage:

  • All work has been reviewed and meets required standards

  • Relevant inspections have been completed

  • Site is clean and ready for plastering

  • Foreman is contacted to schedule next stage (plastering, trims, finishing work)

Why This Matters

A thorough preline checklist ensures:

  • Higher build quality

  • Fewer defects and callbacks

  • Better coordination between trades

  • Compliance with NZ standards

  • A smoother build process from start to finish

At Buildmac, this is standard practice on every project — not an optional extra.
